BEFORE I WAKE

From start to finish, nothing but a dream:
the quiet dream of a divided mind?
Not bad. Too metric, though, and too refined.
Now I lay me down to sleep...my seam
of meaning is unraveling. This theme
or that? I can't decide. I'm not inclined
to go with if I die, and what's behind
before I wake? I'll choose another scheme:
happier, perhaps. My dreams are blue
as water now, blue as daylight sky,
a bright pastel that cuts its losses. I'll make
a song of this in rounds -- something true.
I'll sing myself awake. At least I'll try.
A dash of blue. A snatch of soul to take.
