___ POETRY KANTO is a venue for introducing to readers in Japan and elsewhere exciting contemporary poetry in English, as well as introducing to readers overseas contemporary and 20th century Japanese poetry in English translation. (Brief History of Poetry Kanto) Japan's leading annual bilingual, bicultural poetry magazine POETRY KANTO was first published in 1968, with a view to being presented to the participants of the Kanto Poetry Seminar. The second issue appeared in 1970, after which a dozen-year hiatus followed. Then it resumed publication again in 1984. Fortunately in 2005 we published our 20th anniversary issue, re-tracing the footsteps of the last 19 issues, covering American and English contemporary poets, to say nothing of Australian, Irish, and Japanese poets. Since the first publication, Poetry Center Director William I. Elliott, Professor Emeritus Kazuo Kawamura, advisor and leading poet of Japan Shuntaro Tanikawa, and eminent scholar of American poetry Hisao Kanasaki have made up the founding editorial board. From the year 2005 on, Alan Botsford and Katsumasa Nishihara will continue to receive the honorable baton to seek for the new direction of POETRY KANTO. (2005) *** (Note) Any organization, library or institution who would like to have POETRY KANTO for its poetry collection can send us e-mail at (alan@kanto-gakuin.ac.jp) and we can send it to you if copies are available. POETRY KANTO's successive editions are found in Special Collections of the library of the University of Chicago, and in the poetry collections of the University of Wisconsin Madison and the State University of New York Buffalo. .... |
